Celebration of Stuart McCormick, Glengarry Artist

Alexandria, Ontario: 19 June 2018. The Glengarry Artists’ Collective?Collectif d’artistes de Glengarry offers an exhibition, presentation and reception celebrating one of the county’s renowned artists, Stuart McCormick. 

Born in 1905, McCormick was a prolific, self-taught painter. For 40 years he created an artistic record of the Glengarry landscape. He was commissioned in 1959 to create paintings of the Long Sault Rapids for the opening of the Cornwall Hydro Dam: one was presented to Queen Elizabeth at the official opening.  

 Exhibition: 4 July, 3-8 pm

This is a timely event devoted to a celebration of one of our own.More than 50 paintings, drawings and preparatory sketches by McCormick will be on display at the Sandfield Centre in Alexandria’s Island Park.  

Learn more about McCormick’s work by mingling with art enthusiasts, friends, fans and McCormick family members.  

Presentation: 4 July, 7-7:30 pm

Glengarry County Archivist Allan J. MacDonald–a McCormick fan–will share a brief history and anecdotes of this colourful artist.

Cash Bar & refreshments 6-8pm

The event is open to all: a freewill offering is suggested to defray costs.

 About Glengarry Artists’ Collective?Collectif d’artistes de Glengarry

Founded in October 2016, The Collective has more than 75 members in visual arts, writing and music. The not-for-profit group creates community-building neighbourhood events such as an annual exhibition in a funeral home–though art isn’t dead; workshops for members and non; town-wide art displays, readings and concerts. This year several mural projects involve area students and artists. The Collective’s intention is to make art a living asset in our area.
